If you can’t go all-out for parties, when can you? From cross-body bags to clutches, here are the eight handbags that will be the life of the party.

1. The clutch bag

The ‘clutch bag' can be used to describe an array of bags– from Loewe’s XXL pouches to Valentino’s pocket purses.  Essentially, it‘s handheld and diminutive, storing away your going-out essentials – we‘re talking, cards, keys, and lipstick. However, if your night includes drinks, a dancefloor and throwing some rather interesting shapes, opt for a clutch bag fitted with a detachable strap. That way, you can go hands-free.

2. The tiny tote

Designers have transformed the classic tote into a party-ready style, shrinking it down to mini proportions and adorning it with embellishments. Still spacious enough to store your evening essentials, these tiny totes will be one of the hardest-working bags in your wardrobe.

3. The minaudière

A symbol of opulence, minaudière bags were originally designed in 1930 by fine jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels. Inspired by American writer and socialite Florence Gould, the decorative wristlet bags marry fashion and art. Designed to hold the bare minimum, they‘re made to make a statement with their whimsical silhouettes and ornate embellishments. From Alexander McQueen‘s four-ring style to Published By‘s sculptured pouch, each transforms your evening ensemble into a unique masterpiece. When it comes to these accessories, there are no limitations - the brighter, sparklier and more dynamic, the better.

4. The pouch

What differentiates a pouch from a clutch? While a clutch is typically created with a solid structure, a pouch bag is made from more malleable materials. Revived by Italian powerhouse Bottega Veneta in 2019, their silhouettes are bigger, brighter and bolder than before. Just as well suited for cocktail hour as they are your brunch plans, they slip under your arm like a soft cushion and expand to make room for your purse and make-up to phone and keys. For daytime occasions, lean towards light hues and fuss-free aesthetics, but once night falls, reflect the night sky with metallic finishes and a sprinkle of sequins.

5. The small shoulder bag

Far more than a tuck-and-go silhouette, shoulder bags sit neatly under your arm and be easily accessible. Paco Rabanne’s classic 60s-inspired chainmail creation adds a maximalist spin on the going-out accessory. Or, if you're searching for something more subtle, opt for the satin touch of Jimmy Choo as you match your bag with your shoes.

6. The mini top-handle bag

They say the best things come in small packages, and that’s certainly the case when it comes to mini top-handle bags. Full of character, they’ve quickly become a cult favourite. Jacquemus’ signature style comes in a range of wavy silhouettes and mood-boosting hues; Prada’s nylon micro bags add to the nostalgia of a 1990s slip dress and mules. Remember: the smaller the bag, the bigger the statement.

7. The wristlet

Giving a new meaning to the term arm candy, wristlets are destined to make a statement. Otherwise known as bijou bags, they’re full of personality and bring the party wherever they go. Slipping onto your wrist, they allow you to go hands-free while acting as shimmering accessories. Benedetta Bruzziches crystal-embellished styles reflect the light from every angle, while transforming your after-dark style into a work of art.

8. The classic cross-body

Fusing form and function, the cross-body bag keeps you entirely hands-free. Slipping across your neck and around your shoulders, their straps act as body jewellery meaning you don’t need to worry about deciding which necklace to wear. Keep your accessories simple and let your bag’s chain take centre stage.
